Benchmark Monitoring were very pleased to partner CASANZ in the organisation of two “Black Carbon technical workshops”. The workshops were kindly hosted by NIWA in Wellington New Zealand and OEH in Sydney NSW at the start of October 2018.
The aim of the workshops was to bring together scientists interested in the monitoring of Black Carbon. Delegates received excellent presentations from Magee, Aethlabs, ANTO, CSIRO, NIWA, GNS Science, Auckland Regional Council and OEH. Topics covered instrumentation, data handling and interpretation as well as several case studies show casing work conducted to date.
The presentations stimulated technical discussion during which some opportunities for future collaborations were highlighted. There are some key areas in the field of Black Carbon monitoring that remain open for discussion such as what should be considered the reference method for these measurements and should the term light absorbing Carbon be used rather than Black Carbon!
It is hoped that the momentum in this area will continue to grow and forums such as these workshops will assist in the advancement of this technical area.
